Homemade Houmous

I made houmous for the first time last weekend and was pretty surprised that it was so easy to make and also that it tasted pretty good too!

Don’t expect to get the same intense flavour as shop bought houmous but be safe in the knowledge that you’re eating healthy ingredients and making a healthy, high protein (and vegan) snack.

I relied heavily on Jamie Oliver’s recipe but made a few tweaks along the way. Enjoy!

Ingredients:

1 x 400g can of chickpeas

1 x clove of garlic

1 x dessert spoon tahini

1 lemon

extra virgin olive oil

toasted pine nuts for garnish

pinch of paprika

Method:

  1. Drain the chickpeas (retaining some of the liquid) and put into a food processor.
  2. Peel the garlic and add it along with the tahini, a good squeeze of lemon juice and 1 tablespoon of olive oil.
  3. Season with a good pinch of salt, then put the lid on and blitz until smooth.
  4. Have a taste and add more lemon juice, seasoning or a splash of the chick pea water to loosen if necessary, then transfer to a serving bowl. Garnish with a drizzle of olive oil, paprika and toasted pine nuts.
